Why Icynene?

Healthier
Over the years, a number of studies have confirmed that indoor air can contain a number of harmful chemicals and biological agents such as mold, allergens and volatile organic compounds. There is also growing evidence that poor indoor air quality affects the health and performance of the people who work, live and study in poorly designed and constructed buildings. These studies confirm that air pollution concentrations indoors can be 2 to 5 times higher than the air we breathe outside (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency).

Icynene® is 100% water-blown and contains no HCFCs, HFAs, HFCs or formaldehyde. Icynene is a high-performance insulation and air barrier system that works to minimize the intrusion of outdoor pollen, allergens and pollution from entering the home. By reducing air leakage, Icynene assists in controlling moisture transfer through the building envelope. This helps to minimize condensation and the potential for mold growth within the walls and ceilings. Icynene® has been tested by Texas Tech University and was found not to be a food source for mold.

Healthier - Superior Indoor Air, Low Environmental Impact®
The time spent indoors should help to maintain occupant health and well-being.  That’s why it is important to select building products like Icynene® soft foam insulation and air barrier system, which was manufactured with health and well-being in mind.

Icynene® contributes to a healthy indoor environment in three critical ways:

  1. Icynene® is 100% water-blown and does not emit harmful gases once cured.

Icynene® contains no ozone-depleting substances and does not off-gas over time, unlike some conventional insulation that can deteriorate as time passes.  Icynene maintains its efficiency with no loss of R-value to provide healthy indoor air (and energy savings) for its occupants today and for years to come. Selecting products that provide longevity, like Icynene®, reduces the impact on the environment because it eliminates the need for the installation of additional material in the future.

  2. Icynene creates a continuous air barrier in the walls, ceilings and floors, which minimizes the intrusion of outdoor allergens and pollutants.

Icynene® helps buildings achieve U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED™) credits.

  3. As an integrated insulation and air barrier, Icynene effectively minimizes air leakage and accompanying moisture (air leakage accounts for as much as 99% of moisture movement in a structure).

So effective is Icynene at minimizing condensation, moisture build-up, and the growth of mold or mildew, the product is often specified for use in museums, art galleries, and libraries where condensation control is critical to preserving the integrity of valuable collections.

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) & Moisture Management
When mold spores land on a wet or damp food source and begin growing, severe health problems can occur. Molds produce allergens (substances that can cause allergic reactions), irritants, and in some cases, potentially toxic substances (mycotoxins). Inhaling or touching mold or mold spores may cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

Indoor mold growth can and should be prevented by controlling moisture indoors.

If there is mold growth in your home, you must clean up the mold and fix the water problem.

Icynene® and Moisture Control. Icynene creates continuously insulated, tight walls and ceilings – exactly the leak-free building envelope that is needed to minimize the potential for moisture, condensation and mold. Icynene is integral to a moisture management program and professional testing has concluded that Icynene is not a food source for mold.
